DAY 1.
The pilot announced our descending into Ghana around noon their time. We stretched our legs in an attempt to wake up from our 11-hour plane coma. The energy on the plane slowly shifted into excitement as the plane descended out of the sky. Lower and lower the plane went until the wheels finally touched down on the runway. The pilot came on the speaker and said, “Akwaaba.” The plane erupted into applause and shouts of joy knowing that everyone was in Ghana.
Our trip started to feel ‘real’ when we boarded the plane in JFK airport. About 90 percent of the plane was Ghanaian. Getting to Ghana was a long long trip but it was all worth it. Our welcoming committee in Accra was wonderful and helped us maneuver through the chaotic airport and insane customs. Once we got to our bus, a group from Kpando was there to greet us and measure us for our dresses (and shirt for Al) that we will get when we arrive in Kpando. We cannot wait! We quickly realized that rules of the road do not exist and the traffic is insane in Accra. After a quick-ish Ghanaian lunch at the Accra mall, we jumped on the bus prepared for the hour and a half ride to Apam. Well, the hour and a half ride turned into four and a half ride. Oh well, we got to experience the people and culture of Ghana. We got to see the talented women carrying huge baskets on their heads, walking gracefully through the streets. We bought snacks out of the windows of our van, and talk to some locals when we were at a standstill. It was a wonderful day full of warm, welcoming people. To sum up this day in three words all I can say is “This is Africa.”
